Two New Resources!

von Meghan Lewis

I’m thrilled to kick off the new year by shining a spotlight on a fantastic two-part resource: “Model Embodied Carbon Specifications” and “Embodied Carbon Video Training Series.” These resources are especially exciting because they emphasize three areas I’m most looking forward to in 2025:

  • Local leadership. States and cities have been the leaders on embodied carbon since 2017 and  will continue to create demand for reductions and high-quality embodied carbon data. These resources are broadly useful across public (and private sector) projects.
  • Policy Implementation. As more policies come into effect, CLF has a growing focus on policy and ensuring policies translate into measurable emissions reductions.
  • Collaboration. These training videos and model specifications are the result of joint efforts between CLF staff, UW Life Cycle Lab staff, and architects and engineers in the CLF network; These collaborations are vital to our work, and we are excited to continue building on these partnerships in 2025.

Model Embodied Carbon Specifications

Das Model Embodied Carbon Specifications incorporate project requirements for environmental product declarations (EPDs) and global warming potential (GWP) limits for construction products. These model specifications were developed for the Washington Department of Commerce to support compliance with the WA Buy Clean and Buy Fair (BCBF WA) legislation.  However, these specifications are useful for a broader range of projects/geographies and are offered here as a template to adapt to your needs.

Embodied Carbon Video Training Series

This introductory video series includes five modules on the following topics:

  1. Verkörperter Kohlenstoff 101
  2. Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
  3. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
  4. Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment
  5. Embodied Carbon Policy Strategies

These pre-recorded video training modules were originally developed for an audience of government staff and managers in Washington State. However, the content is applicable to a much broader audience and is offered here as a resource to the entire CLF community.  The training videos are intended to be modular, allowing them to be presented in isolation or as an ongoing training series.

Cambium: Let No Wood be Wasted!

By Ben Christensen, Co-Founder and CEO of Cambium

When Cambium was founded, we set out to make a significant impact in the fight against embodied carbon. For many companies, even those in the digital space, an inevitable carbon footprint is tied to their products or services. Cambium’s mission, however, is to store carbon and reduce emissions by creating products that divert wood from the waste stream while locking away carbon for the entire lifespan of those materials.

Across our industry and throughout my collegiate and professional education, operational carbon has always been a major focus of efforts to reduce carbon emissions. While operational carbon is responsible for a large portion of our built environment's carbon emissions, I have always been interested in the building materials themselves.

Having just celebrated my first anniversary in the workforce with Consigli Construction Co.,  Inc., the post-graduation confusion and apprehension feel distant. “What in the world can I do with an Environmental Science degree?” said the soul-searching student, or something to that effect.
