Kick Off 2026 by Strengthening Embodied Carbon Policy Foundations

As embodied carbon policies continue to expand at the state and local levels, turning them into real emissions reductions depends on a shared understanding of core concepts across agencies, project teams, and partners. Entering 2026, sustaining this momentum will take more than passing new policies; it will also require the capacity to implement them effectively.

CLF’s Embodied Carbon Video Training Series distills the foundational knowledge needed to support effective embodied carbon policy and practice. Initially developed for government staff and managers in Washington State, the series addresses core questions about data, tools, and strategies that inform embodied carbon decision-making across North America.

The five short modules — Embodied Carbon 101, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), Whole Building LCA (WBLCA), and Embodied Carbon Policy Strategies — clarify how these tools are used, by whom, and why they matter. Collectively, they establish a practical foundation for more confident and consistent engagement in procurement, policy development, and project-level discussions.

Ready to get started? Watch one module this month, share it with a colleague or partner, and use it to support an upcoming policy, procurement, or project conversation in early 2026.

Embodied Carbon Video Training Series

This introductory video series includes five modules on the following topics:

  • Verkörperter Kohlenstoff 101
  • Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
  • Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
  • Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment
  • Embodied Carbon Policy Strategies

These pre-recorded video training modules were originally developed for an audience of government staff and managers in Washington State. However, the content is applicable to a much broader audience and is offered here as a resource to the entire CLF community. The training videos are intended to be modular, allowing them to be presented in isolation or as an ongoing training series.

These trainings were published in January 2025.

Introduction to the Climate Smart Wood Group, Climate Smart Wood & Climate Smart Forestry Webinar

Thursday, January 28, 2026, 2pm ET

The Climate Smart Wood Group’s unique coalition of environmental, scientific, green building, and forestry leaders are committed to helping building professionals source wood that is truly “climate smart.” This inaugural webinar in our series will cover the origins, current resources, and future objectives of the Climate Smart Wood Group. It will provide a high level overview of CSWG’s definitions of climate smart wood and climate smart forestry (CSF), followed by a deeper dive into Northwest Natural Resource Group’s work promoting CSF among landowners in western Washington.

Great Plains Institute 2025 State Legislative Recap Three-part Webinar Series

Join the Great Plains Institute to review legislative trends in carbon management on January 13, hydrogen on January 20, and procurement on February 10! This three-part webinar series will recap key state legislative trends from 2025 across carbon management, hydrogen, and procurement.

February 10 | Procurement – In the procurement webinar, we'll examine nearly 50 bills introduced and five enacted. We’ll hear from Hanna Waterstrat, Director of Washington State's Office of State Efficiency and Environmental Performance, and Taylor Linnell, CEO of BuiltCold. Using Washington State's Buy Clean and Buy Fair law as a case study, the speakers will discuss how states are moving from policy to implementation, including timelines, processes, lessons learned, and practical insights.
