Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) modeling of carbon-storing materials
The Department of Architecture at the University of Washington in Seattle is seeking a post-doctoral research scholar to conduct advanced research on the environmental impact of novel carbon storing materials and innovative building systems. The position is part of an ARPA-e funded, collaborative research project involving the Carbon Leadership Forum, the Integrated Design Lab and the Center for International Trade in Forest Products. The project will develop life cycle assessment (LCA) models of novel, carbon-storing building materials and building components resulting in open source publishing and tool development. The project will provide an opportunity to develop LCA methods and tools for comparative analysis at the material and building scale, including dynamic LCA, spatio-temporal analysis, and treatment of biogenic materials alongside a multi-disciplinary team. The position is based in Seattle WA, has a duration of 2 years with a possible extension to 4 years. The post-doctoral scholar will be working under the supervision of Kate Simonen.

- Candidates are required to have a PhD in Engineering, Material Science, Architecture, Environmental Science or a related field. Foreign equivalents will be accepted.
- Highly-motivated and independent researcher with a demonstrated record of scholarship and technical expertise in life cycle assessment (LCA), including but not limited to LCA modeling, life cycle inventory (LCI) data management, statistics and data science.
- Experience with carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies and pathways relevant to the building materials, forestry, and agricultural sectors desired.
- Strong LCA modeling and data analysis skills, interest in open-source development and computation desired.
- Good communication and writing skills.
