The greenhouse gas emissions that are released in the early phases of a life cycle, arising from materials production and construction-installation. These emissions are released before the object of interest (e.g., building or infrastructure) starts being used.

Reference: “The emissions caused in the materials production and construction phases (A1-A5) of the lifecycle before the building or infrastructure begins to be used. In contrast to other categories of emissions listed here, these emissions have already been released into the atmosphere before the building is occupied or the infrastructure begins operation.” World Green Building Council Report, “Bringing Embodied Carbon Upfront” (2019)
