We are so excited to release the CLF Whole Building LCA Benchmark Study v2 dataset!

by Mel Chafart, Research Affiliate

Our dataset encompasses detailed and harmonized building design characteristics, material quantities, and environmental impacts for 292 building projects across the United States and Canada.

In total, the dataset represents nearly 5 million square meters of newly constructed floor area. To our knowledge, this dataset is the largest and most comprehensive currently available.

The dataset aims to enable designers, owners, researchers, and policymakers to analyze and compare the impacts of buildings, set performance targets, and motivate impact reductions. We hope this catalyzes future initiatives to broaden and improve LCA data collection to support sustainable design and construction research.

In the coming months, be on the lookout for new reports and journal articles from CLF and the UW Life Cycle Lab based on this dataset. We’re looking forward to publishing all the great work from our team!

New: WBLCA Public Dataset

We are thrilled to announce the release of an open-access dataset of WLBCA results from the WBLCA Benchmark Study v2. The dataset encompasses highly detailed and harmonized building design characteristics, material quantities, and environmental impacts for 292 building projects across the United States and Canada. In total, the dataset represents nearly 5 million square meters of newly constructed floor area.

Evaluating and Underwriting Embodied Carbon: Pain and Profit

By Thomas Stanchak – Managing Director of Sustainability, Stoneweg US

I think my honest impression is fair: many real estate investors view embodied carbon as a geeky academic exercise that’s complex and impractical, a big time-wasting distraction, and a completely sunk cost with no tangible value. My personal experience has led me to a completely different conclusion.

Reporting and Baseline Options for Building Embodied Carbon

March 13, 2025 | The California Air Resources Board (CARB) staff invite you to participate in a virtual public workshop to provide input on CARB’s development of a framework for measuring and reducing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from building materials used in California. At this workshop, staff will review the statutory requirements for manufacturer and project-level data reporting and baseline emissions quantification, and introduce staff concepts for reporting, baseline estimation, and emissions accounting.
