The POD|LCA Project: An Update Through Memes

par Monica Huang
Researcher at the Life Cycle Lab, University of Washington

I’m not going to lie — the Parametric Open Data for Life Cycle Assessment (POD|LCA Project) has been a challenging project. It’s been so challenging that I’ve been making memes about it, with the help of our team’s various pets. Here are a few.

Carbon-negative? In 2022, the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) announced funding for a program called Harnessing Emissions into Structures Taking Inputs from the Atmosphere (HESTIA). 18 HESTIA Teams were awarded funding to develop a carbon-negative material or building design solution. CLF, along with a team of researchers at the University of Washington (the Center for International Trade in Forest Products and the Integrated Design Lab), was awarded $3.7 million over 4 years to develop custom, parametric LCA screening tools to evaluate carbon-negative projects.

Jaclyn Lee

by Jaclyn Lee, Structural Engineer, HOL

Growing up, my immigrant parents always stressed the importance of minimizing waste, recycling, and reusing whatever we could; and to be grateful for the clean air and the four seasons of New England...To this day, and now more than ever, these values still hold true in that I make a concerted effort to reduce waste and think about how things can be reused before going into landfill.

11th Quarterly Forum: Company Decarbonization Plans

Thursday, October 3, 2024 at 11AM EDT

The MEP 2040 Commitment invited signatories to establish a company plan to reduce operational and embodied carbon across MEP systems on all projects, targeting zero by 2040.

Several signatories have shared their plans through the MEP 2040 website. Representatives of some of these organizations will provide a quick recap of their Plan, and then join a panel moderated by the Steering Committee’s in-house Wizard, Kim Shinn, taking your questions on how your firm can develop your own plan.

Panelists

  • Bradley McClain, Wight

  • Dylan Jones, EwingCole

  • Kaylee Levine, IMEG (formerly Rushing)

  • Luc Leung, SOM

  • Nicole Isle, Glumac

  • Sarah Halstead, Windward

  • Tim Kilby, DBR

Report on End-of-Life Modeling and Data in North American Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment Tools

In Spring, 2024, the Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF) published a pivotal research document titled "End of Life Modeling and Data in North American Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment Tools." This publication is a result of a collaborative effort with the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL), Building Transparency (BT), and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM).

The research provides an in-depth analysis of end-of-life (EOL) processes for building materials, a critical aspect often overlooked in sustainability assessments. By conducting interviews, surveys, and workshops with industry experts, CLF researchers gathered comprehensive insights into the functionalities and data requirements of whole building life cycle assessment (WBLCA) tools.

CLF's Kate Simonen selected for 2024 Women in Architecture Award by Architectural Record

"Licensed as an architect and structural engineer, Simonen connects professional experience in high-performance building design and technical expertise in life-cycle assessment to spur collective action toward bringing net embodied carbon to zero through cutting-edge research, cross-sector collaboration, and the incubation of new approaches. Under her management, the Carbon Leadership Forum has grown, becoming globally recognized for advancing embodied-carbon data, methods, and policy, and for inspiring and empowering collective action to achieve those ends."

A Letter to Architecture from MEP Engineering

by Kayleigh Houde
Associate Principal and the global Computational Projects Lead at Buro Happold

Can we talk about refrigerants and a few other things that keep us up at night?

Dear Architect,

It’s me again, MEP Engineering, your overly analytical cousin (that you love being sat next to at the Thanksgiving table.) I know I’ve made things complicated in the past regarding my doggedness on the climate change movement, but I’m changing my ways -- I promise. If I have your ear again, could you try to listen? After all, the systems I create help your building occupants stay well with filtered outdoor air, stay comfortable in ambient conditions, avoid straining their eyes by delivering power to those beautifully curated light fixtures, find their way to safety in the event of a hazardous event, and enjoy the convenience of indoor plumbing.

Register now for the October 10 meeting!

CLF's Embodied Carbon NGO/Government Roundtable has the following objectives:

  • Share news, strategic plans, resources, and tools related to embodied carbon.
  • Report planning and future dates for conferences, webinars, and meetings.
  • Inspire and facilitate ongoing communication and conversation among key leaders related to embodied carbon.
  • Encourage convergence on shared embodied carbon terminology, data standards, benchmarks, and targets for embodied carbon reduction.

A typical 90-minute quarterly meeting is attended by up to 50 organizations and hears reports from 15-20 organizations on current plans, publications, initiatives, and events related to eliminating embodied carbon from buildings and infrastructure. Presentations are limited to NGOs and government agencies, but others are welcome to attend and listen to the presentations and discussion.
