Understanding Uncertainty in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): Navigating the Unknown

by Anber Rana, Post-doctoral Scholar, University of Washington

In March 2024, I began investigating uncertainty in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as researcher on CLF’s POD|LCA project. Despite my extensive experience as an academic researcher in primary LCA, this was a new frontier for me. This project presents me with a unique opportunity to delve into uncertainty analysis in LCA, a topic that has not been fully explored. Understanding these uncertainties is crucial for ensuring the reliability and robustness of LCA results, given the paramount importance of sustainability and informed decision-making.

Inspire Others with Your Own Member Impact Story!

by Meghan Byrne, Engagement and Communications Lead

Impacto de los miembros has been a cornerstone of the CLF Newsletter for the past four years. Over this time, nearly 200 members of the CLF network have shared their stories of sustainability and embodied carbon leadership. We’ve heard from individuals who discovered their passion for sustainability through lifelong environmental stewardship, as well as newcomers who found themselves in embodied carbon positions with little prior expertise. Despite the diverse backgrounds, one common thread always emerges – a genuine optimism for change, growth, and a shared excitement for reducing embodied carbon in the built environment.

"Is Wood Always Good?

This recent episode of Kristof Irwin's Building Science Podcast shines a light on the current industry move back toward biogenic building materials, with a specific focus on the wood products we use for the construction of homes and buildings. The core question we explore here is “Is wood good, always and in all cases? “ What are the right perspectives to have regarding forests, trees, wood, and carbon accounting?

Chris Magwood from RMI and HomebuildersCAN y Jacob Racusin of New Frameworks Natural Design/Build unpack the seemingly simple question of “Is wood good?” With this as a starting point other questions logically follow.

  • What would be the carbon outcome of not cutting the tree down?

  • Where is carbon stored in forests?

  • How much of that forest-sequestered carbon ends up in our lumber yards and homes?

  • Are current forest management practices appropriate?

  • Are the certification programs trusted to protect our forests up to the task?

Enabling Contractors to Play a Leading Role in Reducing Embodied Carbon

Article by Brittany Harris, Qualis Flow Co-founder and CEO | Non-executive Director of the Environment Agency | Enterprise Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering

We can optimize our design to the nth degree on paper, specifying reused, recycled, and low-carbon materials, but what we specify in the digital world of design is not necessarily what is built in the physical world. However, it is in the physical world that we actually invoke the carbon emissions we aim to reduce.

Without verifying our impact throughout construction, we have little hope of truly tackling the colossal carbon footprint of our amazing industry. Additionally, without detailed data on the quality and quantity of materials in our assets, we won’t be able to maximize the reuse of materials in the future, further reducing our industries carbon footprint and unlocking the circular economy.

Embodying Justice: Intersectional Decarbonization

by Meghan Byrne, Engagement and Communications Lead

An intersectional approach to climate action and social equity necessitates confronting issues of environmental racism, economic inequality, and systemic injustice. This includes scrutinizing workforce representation and recognizing the systemic barriers that hinder diversity in roles impacting environmental justice (EJ) communities. It involves challenging norms and reimagining our relationship with the built environment, advocating for sustainable and affordable housing, prioritizing green spaces and public transportation, and designing resilient cities that foster social cohesion and inclusivity.
