Embodied carbon emissions at Microsoft

Microsoft has committed to becoming a carbon negative company by 2030. This means that reducing Scope 3 emissions, including the embodied carbon associated with construction of their buildings, is critical to reaching their commitment.

Microsoft is focused on reducing carbon emissions across its operations, from buildings and datacenters to employee transportation. This white paper, “Reducing Embodied Carbon: An inside look into how Microsoft is reducing emissions during the construction of new buildings and datacenters” places a focus on Microsoft’s work to reduce embodied carbon in the design and construction of our buildings and data centers. The goal of the paper is to share the data and lessons learned from Microsoft pilot projects, in hopes that other organizations adopt deep carbon reduction commitments and share their experiences in return.
