It\u2019s been so challenging that I\u2019ve been making memes about it, with the help of our team\u2019s various pets. Here are a few.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/carb-neg-cat.png\" width=\"281\" height=\"271\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-987499397 alignleft size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/carb-neg-cat.png 281w, https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/carb-neg-cat-12x12.png 12w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px\" \/>Carbon-negative? <\/strong>In 2022, the\u00a0 Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) announced funding for a program called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arpa-e.energy.gov\/technologies\/programs\/hestia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harnessing Emissions into Structures Taking Inputs from the Atmosphere (HESTIA)<\/a>. 18 HESTIA Teams were awarded funding to develop a carbon-negative material or building design solution. CLF, along with a team of researchers at the University of Washington (the Center for International Trade in Forest Products and the Integrated Design Lab), was awarded $3.7 million over 4 years to develop custom, parametric LCA screening tools to evaluate carbon-negative projects.<\/p>\n<p>We are putting together methods, compiling LCA data, and creating tools to help calculate LCA impacts for R&amp;D teams to help them determine whether their projects are truly \u201ccarbon-negative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As shown in the meme above, Chris\u2019s cat couldn\u2019t believe we were tackling this topic. His expression says it all. It is very ambitious.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-987499401 alignright size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/safety-cat.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/safety-cat.png 339w, https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/safety-cat-300x233.png 300w, https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/safety-cat-15x12.png 15w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/>HESTIA Team Data.<\/strong> As a part of the HESTIA Program, we needed to work with all of the HESTIA Teams. Since the HESTIA Teams had to share potentially proprietary data with us, we had to sign Data Transfer and Use Agreements (DTUAs) with each HESTIA Team and take special precautions for file storage, file sharing, and general data privacy. This involved a lot of bureaucracy, legalese, and anxiety, but it was important.<\/p>\n<p>As shown on the right, Steph\u2019s dog, Akiko, demonstrates our commitment to data protection through her hi-viz safety vest: \u201cSafety is #1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-987499398 alignleft size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/dynamic-cat.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/dynamic-cat.png 266w, https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/dynamic-cat-226x300.png 226w, https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/dynamic-cat-9x12.png 9w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/>Dynamic LCA<\/strong>.\u00a0 One of the requirements of this project was to incorporate dynamic LCA into our methodology.\u00a0 We\u2019re still figuring this out, but once we do, I hope we can go <em>back to the future<\/em> and be done with all the hard parts already.<\/p>\n<p>On the left, Akiko is demonstrating the coolness of this project through her very cool doggy sunglasses.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-987499399 alignright size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ghost-cat.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"254\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ghost-cat.png 254w, https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ghost-cat-231x300.png 231w, https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ghost-cat-9x12.png 9w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/>Biogenic carbon.<\/strong>\u00a0 Another challenge of this project is tackling the challenging issues surrounding biogenic carbon in LCA.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the concept of \u201cavoided emissions.\u201d On the right, Ethan\u2019s cat, Opie, is using Halloween decorations to frame this deeply philosophical concept: <em>Are emissions really emissions if they are never emitted?\u00a0 Are avoided emissions\u2026 the Ghost of LCA?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-987499402 alignleft size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/sink-cat.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"377\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/sink-cat.png 377w, https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/sink-cat-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/sink-cat-16x12.png 16w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" \/>Carbon sinks.<\/strong> Buildings have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale by acting as carbon sinks.\u00a0 <em>But what about kitchen sinks?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Again, Opie is a thought leader in this field, as shown on the left.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LCA data<\/strong>. Perhaps the biggest challenge on this project is finding LCA data for all of the special materials that the HESTIA Teams are using in their labs\u2014materials that cannot be found in standard LCA databases.\u00a0 My cat, Igloo, is very concerned about this, as shown below.\u00a0 <em>What if we can\u2019t find data in any databases or the &#8220;literature&#8221; and also what if we can\u2019t find proxy data?\u00a0 What are we going to do?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-987499400 aligncenter size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/igloo-cat.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/igloo-cat.png 465w, https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/igloo-cat-300x176.png 300w, https:\/\/carbonleadershipforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/igloo-cat-18x12.png 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 465px) 100vw, 465px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Recently, though, we\u2019ve had a breakthrough on this front: The <a href=\"https:\/\/idematapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Idemat database<\/a>.
